Food. It’s what connects us all, and the focus of our first TEDxRVA Salon event, Updating the Menu.
On January 23rd, 2017, a full house gathered at Kitchen Thyme to watch three previously recorded TED talks on the current state of the general American diet, how we think about the food we eat, and how it gets to our tables.
After screening each TED talk– Jamie Oliver, Dr. John McDougall, and Duron Chavis – several community leaders who are engaged in the Richmond food scene facilitated small group discussions about how we can be positive change agents to impact food-related issues in our own communities.
We even heard from Richmond’s own urban farming expert and 2014 TEDxRVA speaker, Duron Chavis, who shared what he’s doing now as Lewis Ginter’s Community Engagement Coordinator to bring urban agriculture to Richmond and encourage healthier lifestyles in lower income areas.
It’s our hope these Salon events spread ideas, spark discussion, and encourage us all to get involved with the amazing groups doing exceptional work in our city, and help bring these ideas to life.
Special thanks to Kitchen Thyme for hosting the event, and the following organizations for their involvement. You inspire us, and give life to so many positive changes in our community.
