Desiree Roots | Performer

As an active member of the Richmond jazz and theatre scene, Desiree Roots has showcased her acting and singing talent regionally for over 35 years. A product of the Richmond Public Schools system, Desiree took to the stage professionally at the age of 13. She later attended Virginia Union University on a full scholarship where she earned her B.A. in Education and Performance, and completed her graduate studies at the University of Michigan. Since her debut, Desiree has starred in over 30 stage productions. Recent theatre credits include lead roles as Effie White in DREAMGIRLS, Sofia in The Color Purple, and Caroline in Caroline or Change where she received the RTCC Award for Best Actress in a Musical. This past April, she portrayed Ella Fitzgerald in a centennial celebration of the music legend in a production she wrote and directed.
